This
concentration is a collaboration between the
Institute
for Community Inclusion
(ICI), the
Public
Policy Doctoral Program,
the Leadership
in Urban Schools Doctoral Program
What is it
About?
This concentration addresses the
changes in special education policy and practice.
Students have opportunities to develop skills in design,
implementation, management and analysis of programs and
systems that support children, youth, and adults with
disabilities.
The program is designed for
educational leaders in school-based management or policy
development to integrate current policy and practices
across general education, special education and community
resources to build partnerships, leverage resources, and
promote systems change.
Benefits
- There is a seven course
concentration that is embedded into the required Public
Policy or Leadership in Urban Schools doctoral course
sequences.
- Students will be required to
attend monthly meetings of concentration students and the
faculty management team.
- There will be two afternoon
classes (Foundations of Public Policy I and
II)
- There will be a course overload in
the Fall semester of year one (only applicable to LIUS
program participants).
- There will be a Special Seminar in
the Summer of year II and Collaborative Leadership in the
Summer of year III.
- Internships require that students
incorporate strategies for linkages and collaboration
with adult service agencies and special education
programs. Internships will be 300 to 500 hours and focus
on special education or disability policy
issues.
- Students must pass a comprehensive
exam and successfully complete a
dissertation.
- Support stipends will be offered
in the form of graduate assistantships can be in the
amount of $2,000 - $10,000. Each assistantship will
require an investment of work by the student (500 hours
for $10,000 and pro-rated for smaller assistantships).
Agreement as to what the student will do will be
developed in the beginning of each year and incorporated
into a written memo of understanding. (depending upon
funding)

degree from an accredited institution
