"The
power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless
of disability is an essential aspect."

Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web
Web
Accessibility Initiative (WAI)
WAI, in coordination with organizations around the world, pursues
accessibility of the Web through five primary areas of work: technology,
guidelines, tools, education and outreach, and research and development.
Bobby
Bobby is a tool for Web page authors. It will help them identify changes
to their pages needed so users with disabilities can more easily use
their Web pages. For example, a blind user will be aided by adding a
sound track to a movie, and a hard-of-hearing user will be aided by
a written transcript of a sound file on a Web page. Bobby will recommend
that these be added if they do not already exist.
MAGpie
MAGpie is a freeware application developed by WGBH for captioning video.
Section
508
Section 508 requires that Federal agencies' electronic and information
technology is accessible to people with disabilities. The Federal Information
Technology Accessibility Initiative is a Federal government interagency
effort to offer information and technical assistance to assist in the
successful implementation of Section 508.
